What is the purpose of the scheme? To enable the people of this area to help their neighbours who are in need and have no-one to turn to. Who can help? ANYONE – it is sponsored by Churches Together in Loughton, but accepts volunteers (and clients) of all religions and none.  The scheme is supported by funding from Epping Forest District Council. How does the scheme operate? Contact is made by telephone.  Anyone calling the LVC number (8508 6114) will be answered by a Duty Officer who will make a note of the client’s particulars and the help that is needed.  The Duty Officer will then ring round the volunteers to find someone free and available to give the assistance needed. How much time do I have to give? Volunteer for as little or as much as you want and when it suits you.  You may be called upon once or twice a week or less frequently.  It may even be a month or two before your help is sought. What am I letting myself in for? By volunteering you are saying that you are willing for us to ring you when we have a suitable request for help.  It is understood that sometimes you will have to say “No” when it is not convenient, but that, when you are able, you will be willing to carry out the work requested. Will I need a DBS (old CRB) check? YES – if you are volunteering to drive or visit.  Most of our clients are vulnerable adults. NO – if you are volunteering to be a Duty Officer, help with administration or stand for the Committee.   Can I claim expenses? YES – if you are driving a client you may claim reimbursement for the mileage at the current rate.  Fares may also be claimed if you have used public transport when on LVC business.  Clients often make contributions to LVC; boxes are available to collect these.  Acceptance of contributions does not constitute “plying for hire or reward” but drivers should inform their insurer that they are volunteering. Do you have an age limit for volunteers? NO – but drivers who wish to continue over the age of 80 must undergo a sight test and obtain assurance from their GP that they are fit to continue to drive when carrying our clients as passengers. What do I do now? If you are still interested in volunteering contact us to arrange a meeting.  This can be at your own home or at the Office in Loughton Methodist Church, 260 High Road, Loughton IG10 1RB.  We do ask you to provide the names and addresses of two people who would provide a character reference.
